Chapter 33 – Daniella

“It’s not a date,” I insisted.

Cami picked at her nail polish. “Would it be so bad if it was?”

I smoothed out the sweater dress. It was the perfect blend of professional and cute. Hair curled and pulled off my face with a pearly claw clip, thick black tights, and ankle booties, the ensemble was perfect. I reached for my gold hoop earrings.

“It’s a work thing,” I insisted. “Make sure you do some reading before bed.”

“Nah, I’m good,” Brittany said, scrolling through the cheap laptop she kept here so her mom couldn’t pawn it.

I grabbed my purse and shooed them from my room. Spazzing and bothering one another, they scuttled across the hall. Their words rang in my ears, and I paused at the top of the stairs. A date, with a killer. The way Kazimir looked at me, eyes burning with possession. The way he spoke to me, gentle one moment and passionate the next. The way he touched me! It lingered, the memory burning even now. He wanted me. And frick if I didn’t want him. I craved his touch.

Him. A Vlasov Bratva mobster. A killer.

I shook my head hard. He was a dark knight. He had a code of honor, a loyalty to his own. The rest? I could accept his darkest parts because of that code.

And apparently accepting him as he was led to this crazy obsession.

It’s just dinner. He’s finally going to listen to my part of this bargain. Repeating that assertion, I clattered down the stairs and swung around the banister into the living room.

“Dani! Did you hear about that Moretti boy?” Nonna called.

I stumbled. “Dex?”

“Yeah, that one. Forgot there was a whole slew of ‘em.”

There was a terrible moment of silence as I fought to get the words out. “What happened?”

“Oh, right,” Nonna chuckled. “Got sidetracked by this book.”

Quit getting distracted and tell me! But I knew better than to sass her. “No, I didn’t hear. You know I don’t go on social media much anymore.”

“Well it’s hush-hush, but his aunt called me to let me know his mother wouldn’t be at altar guild this weekend.”

I went into the kitchen to pour myself a glass of water, more to hide my expression than any sudden parchedness. “And?”

“Drunk at a bar. Stinking drunk!” Nonna tsked. “Their daddy had it bad, but to hear his auntie speak, Dex gives him a run for his money.”

I gulped a sip of water. Please don’t be him. Please.

I couldn’t stand it if Kazimir got in trouble because of me.

“He was so drunk, the idiot tried to make food in the bar kitchen. Burned his hands!”

Relief sloughed off my shoulders. Just Dex being stupid. Kazimir wasn’t behind it, which meant he couldn’t get in trouble with the Italians.

Wait! Wait just a minute! I slapped my hand over my chest.

“Did I just rationalize Kazimir hurting him would have been okay, so long as Kaz didn’t have repercussions?” I gasped under my breath. Shoot. No. Shit. Shit was the only word that counted here.
